Global Dump Soft Drinks Campaign
Who We Are


 

The Global Dump Soft Drinks Campaign is being spearheaded by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), and the International Association of Consumer Food Organizations (IACFO).

CSPI is a leading North American non-governmental consumer advocacy organization fighting for improvements in diet and health. CSPI was founded in 1971 and is based in Washington, D.C., with offices in Dallas, Texas, and Ottawa, Canada.

CSPI has discouraged excessive soft drink consumption for over a quarter-century. In 1998, CSPI published "Liquid Candy," a ground-breaking report summarizing the health harm due to soft drinks. A second edition of "Liquid Candy" was published in 2005. The report discusses abusive marketing approaches by leading soft drink companies and public policy measures that can help reduce consumption.

CSPI also formally petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to require health notices on soft drink containers, and to require improved nutrition labeling of added sugar content of processed foods and beverages. View the petition.

IACFO, organized by CSPI, The Food Commission UK, and the Japan Offspring Fund in 1997, is a coalition of consumer organizations concerned about diet and health, food safety, and related food and agriculture policy issues. IACFO has member organizations in 12 countries representing most regions of the world.

IACFO worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) in developing that agency's Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity, and Health released in 2004. The WHO's Global Strategy states that consumers should limit their intake of foods high in added sugars and that companies should strive to reduce the levels of added sugars in foods and beverages.

IACFO is now working with WHO and its regional offices to help national authorities develop initiatives implementing the recommendations in the Global Strategy, including the recommendations on sugar consumption.

IACFO also works with the United Nations (UN) international food standards setting body - the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which is sponsored by the WHO and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. IACFO has campaigned for Codex standards that would require disclosure of added sugar content on food labels, reduce the sugar content of standardized foods, and curtail advertising of highly sugared foods to children.
